How it works

An each-way bet is two equal bets in one: half backs the win, half backs a place (top 2–4, depending on the event). You stake the same on each part, so your total outlay is twice the unit stake. The place part pays at a fraction of the win odds — commonly 1/4 or 1/5.

If the selection wins, both parts pay: the win part at full odds and the place part at the fraction. If it only places, the win part is lost but the place part pays. If it finishes out of the places, both parts lose. This calculator shows the return and profit for each outcome.

place odds = 1 + (win odds − 1) × fraction

Each-Way Bet Calculator

An each-way bet is really two bets in one — half on the selection to win, half on it to place. This free each-way calculator splits the stake, applies the place terms, and shows your return and profit for all three outcomes: a win, a place only, and a loss.

How each-way bets work

You place the same stake on two parts: the win part pays at the full odds, and the place part pays if the selection finishes in the paid positions (usually the top 2 to 4). Because there are two parts, your total outlay is twice the unit stake.

The place part is settled at a fraction of the win odds — most commonly 1/4 or 1/5, set by the bookmaker for each event. So a 1/5 place fraction on win odds of 11.0 (10/1) pays place odds of 1 + 10 × 1/5 = 3.0 (2/1).

The three outcomes

If the selection wins, both parts pay — the win part at full odds and the place part at the fraction — the best case. If it places but does not win, the win part is lost and only the place part returns, which can still be a profit or a partial recovery. If it finishes outside the places, both parts lose.

Each-way shines on longer-priced selections with generous place terms; on short favourites the place return rarely covers the doubled stake. The calculator makes the trade explicit for any odds and fraction.

FAQ
How is an each-way bet calculated?expand_more

It is two equal bets: one on the win at full odds, one on a place at a fraction of those odds. Place odds = 1 + (win odds − 1) × fraction. Both parts are staked separately, so total outlay is double the unit stake.

What does 1/5 odds a place mean?expand_more

The place part of your bet is paid at one fifth of the win odds. On win odds of 11.0 (10/1), the place pays 1 + 10 ÷ 5 = 3.0, i.e. 2/1.

Is an each-way bet worth it?expand_more

It is best value on longer-priced runners with extra places, where the place return can secure a profit even without a win. On short prices the doubled stake usually outweighs the place payout.
